It’s common for students to move through Basic Training at different speeds. When this happens, the goal is to keep early finishers engaged while giving others the time they need—without creating extra work for you as a teacher.

Below are simple, effective strategies used by experienced educators (Makers Empire Teacher Ambassadors).

Option 1: Move Early Finishers to Pro Training and Daily Challenges

Many teachers recommend having all students eventually complete the Pro Training Courses, as these build core design skills and confidence.

For students who finish Basic Training early:

  1. Assign Pro Training next

  2. Direct them to the Daily Challenge once they’re ready

This structure works well because:

  • Training builds skill

  • Challenges build confidence

  • Play leads to deeper learning

The Daily Challenge is graded but feels playful, giving students a low-pressure way to apply what they’ve learned creatively.

Option 2: Use Playful Review and Targeted Practice (Especially for K–5)

For younger students or Training Lab quick refreshers, try these options:

  1. Catch the Rabbit - Have students try to beat their previous score. This turns practice into a fun, self-motivated activity.

  2. Ask students to choose one tutorial they found challenging and practice it a few more times until they feel confident. Tutorials involving blockers are often a good focus.

These activities reinforce skills without feeling repetitive.

Option 3: Support Students with Peer Buddying

Pair students who need more time with an early finisher.

  • Early finishers explain steps, demonstrate tools, or talk through decisions

  • Teaching reinforces learning for the helper and supports the learner

  • Support feels collaborative, not remedial

Tip: Rotate buddies and remind helpers to guide rather than do the work.

Option 4: Extend Learning with Challenges and Competition

If students have already completed most Training Lab content, you can:

  1. Assign the Daily Challenge for creative application

  2. Use the Competition Arena for students ready for an extra challenge

Both options help maintain engagement while strengthening design thinking and creativity.

Summary

When students finish Basic Training at different times:

  • Keep early finishers learning with Pro Training and Daily Challenges

  • Support students who need more time through peer buddying

  • Reinforce skills with playful review and targeted practice

  • Use challenges and competitions to extend learning

This flexible approach keeps all students engaged and prepares them to move into project-based learning together.
