You may have noticed a new shape pack in Makers Empire shaper tool called "Otto Parts". These 3D models are part of a robot kit that can be 3D printed and assembled. Everything but the robots electronics can be printed.

The HP Otto kit teaches the basics of robotics, microelectronics and programming. To learn more check out the HP Otto website www.hprobots.com

To understand what kind of modifications we can make to the Otto parts in Makers Empire, it's a good idea to first take a look at the assembly guide on the Otto website.

Notice that the electronics parts are designed to slot or be screwed into the 3D printed parts. Therefore, if we scale the parts in Makers Empire to be bigger or smaller the electronic parts won't fit as intended. For example the Otto top lid has been scaled too large in the below picture.

Likewise, if we add shapes or cut parts where important electronic parts need to go e.g. block the usb port hole. Then we wouldn't be able to charge or program the robot.

Remixing the Otto parts in Makers Empire works best for cosmetic modifications to the outside of the case. Below are a few examples made for the Otto Christmas challenge using Makers Empire. The 3D printed part pictured is the battery holder component, it only serves the purpose of securing the battery so some aesthetic adjustments are not a problem.

Here's a fully assembled Otto robot which has been modified to look like an elf.

For parts that intersect with the Otto chassis its good to use a shape like the cube to give a flat edge for aligning with the chassis walls.

We hope these tips help you get started customising the Otto robot parts. Be sure to share your designs with the community.
