The 3D printer is just one component of 3D printing in a K-8 school.

The consumable that comes with a 3D printer is filament and generally this comes as either:

  • ABS (lego type plastic) or

  • PLA (corn starch material)

PLA is better and safer for school use.

As a guide most schools budget to use 1 x roll of filament for about 1 month for normal school use.

Your school will then need at minimum 3D design software for students to design in 3D for 3D printing.

Your school should also then consider as desired for successful implementation:

  • Professional development for teachers.

  • Support for teachers integrating 3D printing into the curriculum.

  • Teacher resources like lesson plans aligned with curriculum.

  • Support for the use 3D design software.

  • Support for the use 3D printer hardware.
